People's Primary Healthcare Initiative is working in close coordination with Health Sector Government Projects like; National Program for Family Planning & Primary Healthcare (LHW Program), Expended Program for Immunization (EPI), TB DOTS, Malaria Control Program in all the eleven Districts. Besides it, PPHI has also developed linkages with the other Multi-lateral Organizations like; World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and NGOs like; PAIMAN (Save the Children), NCHD, YBWO, DRSP, Green Star Social Marketing & Tanzeem Lissaail-e-Wal Mehroom, Pakistan Institute of Community Ophthalmology (PICO), Medicines Sans Frontier (MSF) and Communication for Effective Social Services Delivery (CESSD).
The objective of institutional linkages is creating synergy in provision of primary healthcare to the poor masses dwelling in rural areas. Once these linkages are developed the poor and illiterate masses can continue to benefit from such interventions even after completion of PPHI, the purpose is make them aware of these efforts so they can benefit for times to come. It is an effort to make them aware of the various facilities the government provides them in one shape or the other.
Furthermore, in the course of collaboration the staff of PPHI has the opportunity to study the management systems of these organizations and thus helps in adoption of best practices as well, making primary healthcare delivery system of PPHI more effective and efficient. Linkages / Coordination with these programmes include arranging of Free Medical Camps, Capacity Building workshops, Establishment of Birth stations, arrangements of awareness sessions etc. the activities of these organizations are discussed below:

1. Sarhad Rural Support Program (SRSP):
PPHI – NWFP / FATA operates under the auspices of SRSP. PPHI, Peshawar has adopted the Administrative and Financial rules of SRSP.

a. Administrative Support:
An expert of relevant field of SRSP is a member of Selection Committee for staffing of PPHI – NWFP / FATA. The service and contract rules of SRSP are applicable on PPHI staff.
b. Financial Support:
Federal Support Unit provides Grant-in-Aid to the SRSP in accordance with the decision taken by the President and the Prime Minister on the subject. The People's Primary Healthcare Initiative is an operation that is lodged within the SRSP as per the aforesaid decision. SRSP is a Company incorporated under section 42 of Companies Ordinance 1984. The Statutory Audit of the SRSP including the PPHI, accounts are conducted annually under the relevant provisions of the Companies Ordinance, 1984 by KPMG, Taseer Hadi Chartered Accountants, Islamabad .
c. Capacity Building :
SRSP is considered the mother of Community Participation Approach in Development in NWFP and it has imparted training to the staff of District Support Unit especially the Social Organizers in forming and developing BHU Support Groups (representing the community members / beneficiaries / stakeholders in BHU decision making process).
d. SRSP CBOs:
PPHI also benefits from the well organized Community Based Organizations (CBOs) of the SRSP. SRSP CBOs are operating in a number of districts / agencies; they also support and lend services to the BHU Support Groups (SG) of PPHI in the Province and FATA.

2. DOST Welfare Organization:
Dost Welfare Organization is a Non-Government Organization providing social, psychological and medical services to the Drug Addicts besides, Women Empowerment. In the field of Drug Addict Rehabilitation PPHI at the BHU level is collaborating its activities with Dost Welfare Organization. Furthermore, the PD Organization also supported us in capacity building of our staff in the relevant field.

3. World Health Organization (WHO):
a. Disease Early Warning System (DEWS):
WHO has established Disease Early Warning System (DEWS) for epidemic-prone diseases in collaboration with PPHI in four districts namely; Peshawar , Nowshera, Charssada and Mardan. The main objective of the system is early detection of epidemic-prone diseases and rapid response with appropriate disease control measures in order to reduce morbidity and mortality in the affected population. Gender Comparisons: A comparison of the consultation by gender shows that in health events other than the five common communicable diseases, female patients consultations are reported higher than males (55% and 45% respectively).
b. Health Education: PPHI in collaboration with WHO is engaged in Health education program for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Paramedic staff is provided by PPHI from the BHUs, for IDP Camps. The target group is sensitized about importance of preventive healthcare. |

c. Free Medical Camps: WHO has arranged Free Medical Camps in collaboration with PPHI. WHO also provided medicines in such medical camps 710 patients have been treated.

4. United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR):
UNHCR started a program called RAHA (Refugee Affected and Host Areas Program) to strengthen the government institutions which are overburdened due to Afghan Refugees Camps. |

BHU Saeed abad, District Peshawar has been identified as a pilot project UNHCR has committed to replicate the same in other districts. Total cost of the project is Rs: 6.68 million. Estimated native and Afghan Refugees beneficiaries are 83,000. The project now stands completed; the following activities were carried out:
- Complete repair of the infrastructure of BHU.
- Improved Sewerage and Sanitation of BHU.
- Renovation of Electricity (Replacement of transformer, Internal Electrification).
- Provision of Safe, Clean drinking water.
- Telephone facility.
- Eradication of Malaria and water Born Diseases, through de-waterization diesel pumps.
- Provision of Fumigation Spray Machine for the Control of Malaria.
- Establishment of Pathology Lab.
- Capacity Building of the BHU staff (MO, LHVs, CHWs/LHWs).
- The entire process of planning, management, financial record and HMIS will be processed and documented by Computer.

5. PAIMAN ( Pakistan Initiative for Mothers & Newborns)
PAIMAN work for awareness of the public about Maternal and Newborns care and Capacity Building of the Medical / Paramedic staff. PAIMAN also arranges Free Medical Camps on quarterly basis in which PPHI provides support in the form of Medicines and Medical Staff. |

PPHI is coordinating activities with PAIMAN in Peshawar , Mardan, and Upper Dir districts, Khyber Agency and Frontier Regions Kohat / Peshawar ; which has a very good effect on quality of healthcare in PPHI districts. In PPHI-Peshawar PAIMAN three female district master trainers were trained on support group methodology and use of IEC material. In Mardan two Medical Officers, ten Lady Health Visitors and four Medical Technicians trained as ToTs. In Upper Dir trained one Female Medical Officer of PPHI on Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn care, ten Lady Health Visitors and twelve Medical Technicians on Essential Maternal and Newborn Care (EMNC), were trained.
Furthermore, PPHI and PAIMAN have jointly conducted Free Medical Camps in Nashnamal and Patrak where more than sixteen hundred patients were treated.
PAIMAN new initiative is District Health Information System (DHIS) in four PPHI districts of Peshawar , Charsadda, Mardan and Upper Dir. |
| 7. National Commission for Human Development (NCHD):
Although now NCHD operations curtailed yet Free Medical Camps in Barawal, District Upper Dir were arranged. More than eight hundred patients were treated. |

| 8. Young Blood Welfare Organization (YBWO)
Young Blood Welfare Organization is an NGO working for the social uplift and welfare of the people in Malakand Division. Its Head Office is located in Dargai, District Malakand with camp offices in the covered districts. YBWO has established a Birth Station at BHU Bandi Nehag, which is fully equipped with essential medical equipments and a LHV has been appointed and paid by them.

| 9. Green Star Social Marketing
Green Star Social Marketing is a Swat based NGO working for the social uplift of the community. The organization has trained five Master Trainer LHVs on Family Planning in District Upper Dir.

| 10. Tanzeem Lissaail-e-Wal Mehroom
Tanzeem Lissaail-e-Wal Mehroom is a Provincial Government Project working for the welfare of the dispossessed. Healthcare is one of the objectives of the project. In the Healthcare Services the project arranges Free Medical Camps throughout the Province. PPHI assists Tanzeem Lissaail-e-Wal Mehroom in monitoring of Medical Camps which are conducted by other organization like Al- Khidmat, Hamza Foundation Welfare, Al-Sehat Foundation Peshawar and Foundation in rural areas. During the current year (January to March) two Medical Camps were arranged, one in Malakand and other in Nowshera districts.

| 11. Pakistan Institute of Ophthalmology (PICO):
The PICO was established with a mandate to start a one year long course in Community Ophthalmology with MSc from University of Peshawar and supported by Health Department, Government of North West Frontier Province and International Centre for Eye Health, Institute of Ophthalmology , London , United Kingdom . |

| PPHI in collaboration with PICO has arranged four Free Eye Camps in district Peshawar in which more than six hundred eye patients were treated.

12. Communication for Effective Social Services Delivery (CESSD):
This four-year community participation project was designed to improve social service delivery at the local level by supporting the Government of Pakistan's "Local Government Plan 2000". Key components of the initiative, which began in 1998 with the support of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), included improving the exchange of information about best practices, providing adult education shaped by the needs of the community, and involving participants in capacity-building to address barriers to good communication.
Four BHUs i.e. Faqir Kallay, Khazana, Charpriza and Chamkani in District Peshawar were selected as a pilot project for strengthening community participation in BHU activities. One day orientation workshop on Implementation of Quality Standards on Primary Healthcare Services conducted by CESSD in collaboration with PPHI and Health Sector Reforms Unit, DoH, GoNWFP BHU staff.

| 13. Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF)
The project aim is to provide access to healthcare services for the Internally Displaced Persons (Hosting with Community, out of the camps) in the Catchment area of Basic Health Unit. After having assessed the needs of those living in host families, MSF decided to support three Basic Health Units namely; Mathra, Mandra Khel & Wadpaga in District Peshawar. Primary Healthcare Services extended to Internally Displaced Population (from Bajaur Agency) in the Catchments area of BHUs. MSF committed to regularly supply essential drugs, material and basic equipments. |

So far MSF has conducted 3 mobile clinics in the Catchments area of above mentioned three BHUs and compiled report (Surveillance Reporting Form Morbidity (diseases) and Mortality (Deaths).
MSF has established Mother and Child Healthcare Centre in BHU Totai, Malakand with state-of-the-art kind of labor room set up in vacant MO House which is operational round the clock, FMO has also been appointed by MSF. Similarly, MSF also provides medicine to another far flung BHU namely Inzargai.

| 14. Leishminia & Malaria Control Program
Leishminia & Malaria Control Program was an IRC (International Rescue Committee) funded project for a period of three months. Mandate of the program is creating awareness among public about Leishminia, Malaria and Capacity building of Medical / Paramedics staff to cope with the out break of these deadly diseases. The program has trained all the MOs, MTs and LHVs of the BHUs in Upper Dir in Cuta Neous Leishminia SIS (CL) and the use of Thermo Therapy.

| 15. District That Works (DTW)
District That Works Program has been launched in Districts Nowshera, Charsadda and Mardan by Health Department, GoNWFP. Through DTW program the doctors and paramedics of PPHI were trained on Health Information Management System (HMIS) in the month of January, 2009.
The Lead Advisor has committed to provide the essential support in the form of Health Education material and technical support to PPHI
